So, they've issued a recall for the Bumbo. I never used one, I personally didn't see a need for it with my child, and probably won't with future children because I think it's important for children to develop their 'sitting' muscles on their own without being 'held up'. But this is only my personal opinion, and holds no bearing to anyone else. However, lots of folks swear by these things, and LOVE them, and by all means they should use them if it helps them or their children. They are about $40 and are sold all over the place. Wal-mart, Target, Sears and other retailers sell them. Some colors fetch a nice price on eBay, and many times their website is sold out of certain styles or colors.
Apparently these are being recalled due to serious head injuries that infants have sustained by being sat in the seat on a high surface... and falling off of it, in the seat. First off, the seat already tells you NOT to place your child on an elevated surface while in the chair. Why are these being recalled due to parents not following the directions in the first place? That would be the same as a hair dryer being recalled because someone used it in the bathtub, when it tells you not to do that in the first place. HELLO?!
I'm not arguing HOW parents use the seat. Parents do whatever they feel is best... heck, Q-Tips say not to use them in ear canals, but 90% of people use them for this purpose. My point is that a product should not be recalled because people are mis-using the product and going against the warnings already printed on the package. If we started doing this, everything, including Q-Tips, would be recalled. The Infant cough medicine recall IMHO
was different, as the printed instructions were not clear and not accurate - which is a valid recall.
Of course I shouldn't be surprised considering we now live in a country where you can sue anyone for anything. We're getting out of control... when will common sense return?
Anywho, if you call about the recall you will receive an updated safety sticker. So if you feel that you need that, by all means get one:
Consumers should contact Bumbo to obtain new warning label stickers and
instructions for the recalled baby seats and should never use the infant seat on
a table, countertop, chair or other elevated surface, the agency said.
